A Raster-encoded Polygon Data Structure for Land Resource Analysis Applications

چکیده

A prototype structure for areal data sets is discussed in the context of providing efficient data storage, retrieval, and analysis as required by land resource analysis applications. The prototype is a "raster-encoded polygon format" and is derived from a run-length ras ter format in which each run has multiple attributes associated with it. A transformation program, involving the first phase of the rasterto-vector conversion process, associates each run with a parent polygon entity. The total size of each entity, and information concerning its adjacency to other entities, are recorded in an entity table along with all attribute values for the entity. This results in a reduction of total volume of the run-length raster file, and simplified subsequent manipulation and retrieval operations based upon attribute values of the data. The underlying raster structure retains its advantages for overlaying new data sets and complex retrieval operations. Since the parent polygon area and adjacency relationships are identified, queries based upon threshold size or adjacency can now be addressed with what is essentially a raster data structure.

Alternative Approaches to Display of Usgs Land Use/land Cover Digital Data

This paper outlines a procedure for converting the USGS GEODATA Land Use and Land Cover files into polygon and raster formats that are compatible with several widely used software systems. Examples are included for SAS/GRAPH®, GIMMS and MAP. There is also a discussion of an approach to handling the grid format on IBM-PCs and color frame buffer systems.

Efficient algorithm for polygon overlay for dense map image data sets

A map consists ofufinite set of mutually disjoint polygons. A data structure and ~~~~ent ulgor~t~m for polygon over1uy of dense map image data sets are d~s~u.~sed. The data structure, referred to as the ending-x structure, is a variant qf the y-partition structure developed by Merrill which is still bcidely acclaimed as an optimum raster data structure. The modest refinement of the ending-x str...

An Efficient Vector-Raster Overlay Algorithm for High-Accuracy and High-Efficiency Surface Area Calculations of Irregularly Shaped Land Use Patches

The Earth’s surface is uneven, and conventional area calculation methods are based on the assumption that the projection plane area can be obtained without considering the actual undulation of the Earth’s surface and by simplifying the Earth’s shape to be a standard ellipsoid. However, the true surface area is important for investigating and evaluating land resources. In this study, the authors...

Feature-based cartographic modelling

Cartographic modelling operations provide powerful tools for analysing and manipulating geographic data in the raster data model. This research extends these operations to the vector data model. It first discusses how the spatial scopes of analysis can be defined for point, line, and polygon features analogous to the raster cell. Then it introduces the local, focal, and zonal operations availab...

Design and Development of Early Warning System for Desertification and Land Degradation

Early warning systems are key components of strategies to reduce risk. This research, by adopting a systematic approach in the management of the risk of desertification and by including previously developed models and systems, offers an integrated efficient structure in terms of early warning for the risk of desertification as a pilot system for semi-arid areas of west Golestan Province in IRAN...
